Setting Up The Web On The KA08 Touch Screen Phone

Sometimes, I get people who are so excited about their new KA08 mini.  This cute little phone has most all of the features of the iPhone in a much smaller package for a much smaller price. But then, their excitement begins to wane when they think that the Internet on their particular phone does not work.  I’ll get comments like “isn’t this phone supposed to get on the Internet?” (It does.)  “Mine can’t seem to connect.”  (It can, but you have to put in the correct settings.) I’ll go over some common problems and fixes in the following article.

Do You Have Data On Your Sim Card?: Probably the most common problem that I get emailed about are people who have a prepaid sim card that covers talk and text (and even MMS or video messaging in some cases) but not data or Internet.  Some sim cards do include web browsing and will just automatically charge you per KB or will charge you more minutes or will eat up more of your balance.  But, in some cases you have to set this up.  You can’t always just insert the card and expect the company to know that you’re going to browse the net.

Go to you carrier’s web site and see what you’re dealing with if you don’t know. If you have a monthly plan, either the web will be included or it won’t.  You can often add it for not much money.

If you’re using a pre paid card or pay as you go, again check with the carrier to see what is included.  For example, with AT&T’s GoPhone, you can either pay per KB or you can buy a media package (called media net.)  This runs around .99 for 1MB and .99 for 10GB as of this writing.  But, you don’t get this until you log in and sign up for it (or call 611 and set it up.)  Once you do, all you have to do now is make sure your settings are correct.

T Mobile has pretty inexpensive web usage for folks with a monthly plan, but you generally have to find a monthly pre paid Internet card if you want to go pre paid.  The pre paid cards from various carriers generally run or so and give you unlimited access for a month, so this is not too bad either way.  No matter which way you go (monthly or prepaid) just make sure that you have this covered with your carrier.  If that doesn’t do the trick, you’ll need to look at your settings.

Setting Up Your Web Settings On The KA08:  Many sellers will ask you which carrier you are going to use and will send you the corresponding phone.  If this happens, you just need an activated sim with data (as described above) and you’re good to go.  Sometimes, this doesn’t happen though.  So, if this is your case, you’ll need to go into the settings. Because occasionally, you’ll get the factory settings and you’ll see that your phone is pointing to China Mobile or something similar.  There is no need for panic.  Just go into the WAP settings, data settings, Java, and MMS settings, scroll down and hit edit.  Find the correct settings either through your carrier or by buying or getting the step by step instructions or software that are available all over the net (usually for only a couple of bucks.) You can either follow along step by step entering the data in (and always remember to then hit “activate”) or you can download software that does the work for you.  Either way, you should be up and running in no time.  (Note: if you’re using Opera Mini, you must go in and also change the Java settings.  If you don’t you’ll keep getting an error message.)

Speaking of opera mini, this is often the fix that I give to people who can get online but who get a 504 message or “not enough memory.”  Often these folks are going to large sites that are difficult to use on a mobile phone.  Often you can just Google the mobile version of that site (Google mobile, MSN mobile, etc.) and you won’t get those messages any more.  Or, you can use Opera Mini (it’s free to download via Java) which compresses many larger sites down so that you can easily see and navigate them.
